Going to War & Responsibility

Why do you think Christine wants Lee to go to war so badly? I wonder if she wanted him killed or if she really had his best future interests in mind. On the other hand, Lee is vehemently opposed to the war, saying “I’m not going to fight a white man’s war” (163). Was Lee obligated to serve in the war? Do you think the United States deserved to have Lee fight for them? And I wonder what happened that made him change his mind. Why did he end up enlisting? How would you handle Lee's situation?

  1. I feel that Christine had Lee's best interest in heart and I'm sure she didnt actually think that Lee would die once he left. I think that she wanted her brother to do what everyone else was doing and not being a coward or that's how she would have seen him. I think that deep down, even with all the things happening with him more intuned to being Native American, he still wanted to please his sister and that's why he enlisted. I dont think i would have done the same thing. I would've taken my chances with my sibling and did what i wanted to do in the first place

  2. I know for a fact Christine didn't want Lee to die. According to the story, you could tell she truly loved and admired him. I believe she really thought that going to war, would be best for his future. I don't believe he was "obligated" to serve. I believe he did it because he thought that would be the best choice. He probably also enlisted to earn respect.

  3. I dont think Christine wanted Lee to die at all. Of all people I think christine would want Lee to be the last to die of anyone. Honestly I don't think that the United States deserves to have Native Americans fight their wars for them because we took this land from them, why would they fight so we could keep it? I dont think Lee was obligated to serve. I feel that he did because it was in his best intrest.

  4. I truly don't think Christine wanted Lee to die. I agree with snarcy, on the fact that he would be the last one that Christine would want to die. The Native Americans shouldn't feel obligated to fight in the war. The white man took their land. On the other hand, it is their country and i believe that they should show some support. Lee did it because he loves this country.

  5. I also agree with Snarcy. i dont think that christine wanted Lee to die. Although Lee was not obligated to serve I think he didn't really have a choice as he would have lost respect. Truly the US doesn't deserve to have Lee fighting its war. However he is a citizen of this country and should show some support for it.

  6. maybe Christien did have Lee future in mind when she told him to enlist. she might have been thinking the army might make him a better man, or maybe pay for college. i don't think the U.S. should force Indians to fight our wars, but if they wont to fight i say let them.

  7. I do not believe in any way, shape, or form that Christine wanted Lee to die. In the beginning of this section we saw that Christine had nothing but love, even possible awe for her brother. Even if she was a little jealous of his connection to their heritage, i seriously doubt that there was enough resentment to wish him dead. I also do not believe that Lee was "obligated" to fight. I'm white and i don't feel obligated join the war on terror, let alone if i was a member of a marginalized group that had so much taken from them. i have no idea what made him change his mind, but it had to have been a good reason given his initial opposition to fighting.

  8. As you can tell Christine never wanted Lee to die. If she would have known he was going to die she never would have brought up the subject about him going to war. But i did get this feeling like Christine did want her brother to go into the army so that once he was gone all the attention wouldn't be on him. Lee kinda was obligated to go into the war tho since there was a draft. He wasn't like Dayton he didn't have a dad that died fighting. i think Lee did end up enlisting because he did want to become the Native American FDR and thats what he thought he had to do. But I honestly think that the US didn't deserved to have Lee fight for them since they never did anything to help Lee and other Native AMericans out.

  9. Agreeing with a majority of the people above, I really dont think Christine wanted Lee to die. I think theat she wanted him to go away so that Aunt Ida would focus more on her and less on Lee. Maybe Christine thought that she would be able to develop a closer relationship with Aunt Ida without her being compared to Lee since he was away. On the other hand, I dont think that the United States was deserving of Lee because they were the ones who pushed the indians which lead to a life on the reservation. I think that in the end Lee enlisted because people so close to Lee wanted him to enlist, and he decided it would be in his best interest if he wanted to be on the Indian Board. Or maybe he just wanted to experience life outside of the reservation and see what he can become and meet new people.

  10. I feel that Christine's intention for Lee going to war was not for him to die. I partly agree with Belle, that Christine might have wanted Lee gone to get some attention she never had as a child..but on the other hand did she really care if Aunt Ida gave her the time? I think Lee based his decision on enlisting for the war because he agreed with his sister in that he will be more respected by people of the reservation and not look cowardly if he did not fight. I honestly feel that it's people like Lee that get overlooked because of their race and it's sad to think that a person with such good intentions and morals had to die for a country that he may not have seen the good in.

  11. I think Christine wants Lee to go to the war becuase its something he wants to do with his life. I think that she feels if he wants to fight for his country then it would be good for him. She didnt want her brother considered as a "coward". So no i dont think Christine wanted Lee to die, she loved her brother. Yea the U.S deserved Lee to fight for them, hes and american right? I think he should fight for his country

  12. I dont think that Christine wanted Lee to die. That was her best friend growing up and she admired him greatly. I think she wanted Lee to serve because other boys/men went to war. I agree with what most people stated that she did not want him to look cowardly among his peers. For him to feel obligated on the other hand is not right because the white men expect everyone to fight and support their country. But, when did the "white men of america" support the indians on the reservation?

  13. I don't believe that Christine wanted Lee killed and that she was in fact looking out int he best interest of Lee. She knew he wanted to be an Indian Chief, and if people looked back and remembered him for not serving for our country then I don't believe he ever would have achieved that goal. I think that Lee would be s great soldier because he seems like the type of person that gives 100% to their commitments. I believe that he enlisted because he finally realized if he wanted to achieve his goals then he would have to give some to get some. By enlisting he earned respect of the reservation. If I was in Lee's situation I would have handled it the same.

  14. deciding you want to go to war is the most stressful decision anyone will have to make because they are putting themselves in a life or death situation. i think it was pushed onto Lee by Christine because he would gain respect and thats what all the other boys were doing.

  15. I don't think Christine wanted him killed but instead wanted to go away for some time so she wouldn't feel compared to him so much. I don't think the United States deserved to have Lee fight for them. If he can't even have the same rights and opportunities than why should he fight so that other people can? In the end he may of ended up enlisting because he saw it as the only chance of possibly getting somewhere in life instead of being stuck on the plantation for the rest of his life. I'm not sure how I would handle Lees situation. I think I would feel guilt ridden though.

  16. I believe that Christine saw her brother's potential as a leader in her community and knew well that how he was perceived would be instrumental in his success. Observing the patriotism taking place around the country, she probably assumed that by enlisting, Lee would be demonstrating the leadership and loyalty qualities that a community was looking for. I don't think that she was trying to get him killed--I honestly think that she wanted to push him to be his very best and that she admired and loved him a great deal.

  17. i do not think that christine wanted her own brother to die, i feel that she really does love him more then she every says!i think she was just tryin to push him to what she knew he could do. i do think that lee should serve he lives in the us and i feel that everyone should fight. i think he did not want to go because he was still upset about what we did to them by taking there land and all the anger is still there. but i dont think that is what matters right now winning the war is more important to me.

  18. I think that christine did not want her brother to die and that she had his interests in mind. i trully do not think that lee was obligated to go to the war nor do they deserve to have him fight for them. it was not his war to fight and he had no part in it. i think the reason he ended up enlisting is because i think after a long period of time and christine always up on his face that he just went out and tried it. i think that lee should not have gone out to the war. he would have been better to stay at the reservation and do what he thought was right.

  19. I don't think christines intensions were for lee to enlist and end up dead. i feel that christine wanted a way for lee to get off the reservation to better himself so that more opportunities present themselves. For some reason i don't feel that it mattered if the united states deserved his present in the war i think that who ever enlist is there for a common reason and thats all the united states wants not wether or not they deserved him.

  20. I dont think Christine wanted him to go because she wanted him to die but rather because she thought it was best for him. I think she believed leaving the reservation would be good for hom and give him chances for success. I think the US does deserve his presences because he was a good person to have supporting the country in a time in need.

  21. I think Lee is a great guy. It seems like alot of people in the reservation hold him in high regards. Christine feels like people like him way more than they like her. Maybe she just wants him gone and then people would pay attention to her. I don't think the U.S. really cares who they have fight for them. They'll take anyone

  22. I think Christine wanted Lee to go because she felt he deserved the respect and opportunites that he wasn't necessarily getting on the reservation. She might have felt he deserved a lot more than was offered there. I have no idea why Lee decided to enlist. I don't think he necessarily did it to make Chrstine happy. She might have gotten him thinking about the possibilities of enlisting and what could be offered which made him decided to do so.

  23. I think that Lee and any other Native American should not be forced to fight in the war because of the horrible things the settlers have done to them. I think Christine had Lee's best interest at heart. If he had dodged the draft he wouldn't have been voted into the council. I find it weird that Dayton took Lee away for a while and when they came back Lee was willing to enlist. Dayton must have done or said something that persuaded Lee into joining. It seems very interesting and suspicious since Lee was so passionate about not joining the war.

  24. I believe Christine wanted Lee to go off to war in order to look out for the best future. Lee was not obligated to go to war, he enlisted to get respect. A lot of women are for their husbands, or boyfriends going to war, solelyon the fact that it could provide them with agrat future. To Christine, anything was better than her past. I think Lee enlstd soloey for the respect, and to ensure a great future.

  25. I think that Christine wanted Lee to go off to war in order to make a better future. He did not have to go to war but he wanted to be seen as a hero. But I believe that Native Americans should not be allowed to fight because of what the government has done to them. But the army will take any able bodied people, I guess.

  26. I think Christine really loved Lee and would never want him to die. I think she just wanted the rest of the world to see the greatness she saw in her brother. Christine looked up to Lee and wanted him to succeed and maybe she saw this as the way for him to do it?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think Christine loved Lee because he was her brother, and why would she want anything bad to happen to him? Lee wanted to go and so Christine was just supporting him in his decision. I agree with zman2010 when he saud that Lee wanted to be seen as a hero.

  28. i feel that Christine had no right to involve herself into Lee's life after what she slapped i feel that her hitting him was unnecessary. if she wanted to get a point across then she could have gone about it another way. And then to cause Dayton to force Lee the turn his back on his principle was really conniving. She might have had Lee's interest at heart but their are better ways to show them.

  29. You know that Christine doesn't want Lee to die so she definately has his future on her mind. Should Lee have to fight? No it is personal choice whether you want to fight or not. The United States doesn't deserve anyone to fight for them. No one should deserve to fight for someone it is up to personal choice. He did this for his sister. If i were him i would want to do want my siter told me to do. I would do what my heart felt was best for my life and what will get me far in life

  30. I don't think that Christine to die, but wants hime to be honorable and not look like an outcast. So, yes i do feel like he was obligated to go to war.I don't think the united states had the right to make him fight for them, because that war was fought by the poor minorties in the United States and I do not think that is right. He finnally enlisted, because I feel he got peer pressured into it. I would probably do the same, I would not like to be looked as a coward or anything bad like that.

  31. yeah i think christine deep down has the best intrests for her brother. i think she wanted him to become something bigger and joining the army might have been a way to do that. Although he did go to war, i dont think he was obligated to fight nor did america deserve him to fight for them. America and the white people never did anything for the indians and in fact killed them and took their land...so they didnt have the right to make him go to war after all they've done to indians. I agree with corey in how part of him enlisted to keep a good name and not look like a coward but overall i dont think he should have given his life after the way the indians have been treated.

  32. I don't think that Christine had wanted anything bad to happen to Lee because she cared about him and wouldn't want him to die. I don't think Christine had a right to kind of push Lee into the army. Christinewas also being a little selfish because she wanted Lee gone so she could get more attention. I believe if your going to join the army it should be your own decision and you shouldn't join because pressure.

  33. Today, are Native American's obligated to enlist? I thought they didnt have to if they lived on the reserve. could be wrong. Christine wanted Lee to enlist for selfish and unselfish reasons. She knew that not enlisting was looked down upon, and if Lee didnt enlist he would lose respect from people. Selfishly she didnt want a "unpopular" brother. Unselfishly, she knew that Lee wanted to run for some type of leadership, and that if was "unpopular" then we would not win. On the quiz i said that she should have a little blame on her, because a lot of her motive was the selfish reasoning.

  34. I really dont think that Christine wanted Lee to die. She just wanted whats best for him. I think she really just wanted him to do what other people were doing. Lee wasnt "obligated" to serve.

  35. she had his best future interest in mind for sure. she wanted the best for him and believed that was the best for him and it would help him out later on in life. he wasnt obligated in my opinion and the united states didnt need him. i think he ended up enlisting because he realized that his mom was right and his best future would have been to enlist.
